Schulte Design / automedia / nextline...

а мейби это просто реставрированный и оттюненый fj45 wagon, весьма похоже (по крайней мере внешне хотя бы сделать так вполне реально)

We were plodding up a steep track in low-ratio four-wheel drive in Toyota's priceless, handmade Retro Cruiser, looking for the easiest route when five-time Pike's Peak winner Rod Millen and the vehicle's builder, said: "Just drive it straight through the middle". The "middle" was a washed-out gulley full of rocks and deep potholes, but we did as we were instructed, and the Retro Cruiser crept and lurched through the section with no problems. Not bad for a wagon dating back to 1967, is it?

Of course, the FJ-45 Toyota Land Cruiser you see here has benefited from a complete rebuild, and is now powered by a modern 4.7-liter V-8 engine from Toyota's current Land Cruiser, along with that vehicle's transmission and differentials. But, as you can imagine, getting them to fit under the FJ-45 was a real challenge.

To conform to a modern Land-Cruiser's chassis dimensions, the whole FJ-45 body had to be lengthened by 10-inches, and be widened by six inches. Sounds simple, but to accurately fabricate a widened roof, Millen had the original roof digitized (By DZM Design Center in San Diego) then widened virtually on a CAD system. Using that data, he then milled a wooden mold from which a fiberglass roof could be made. To restore structural rigidity lost with the adoption of a fiberglass roof, Millen fabricated a full roll cage inside the cabin.

The grille and hood were widened only three inches in the interests of preserving the classic FJ-45 look, so the fenders had also to be extended and raised to match the vehicle's increased track. The rear gate was widened by acquring a second rear gate, then cutting and joining them. While installing the new engine, Millen situated the V-8 eight inches rearward of where it would normally be, requiring a longer front driveshaft, and a shorter rear one. As in the current Land Cruiser, the rear diff is lockable via a driver-controlled button, and the Retro Cruiser gets a center diff-lock switch too. Custom made control-arm suspension pieces are found front and rear, with torsion-bar springing at the front, coil-over-shock units in the rear, and remote-reservoir Bilstein shocks at all corners.

Since a modern Land Cruiser cowl now lives behind the engine (allowing air-conditioning), Millen designed a new dash panel to house a contemporary instrument panel and switchgear. While he was at it, he added a GPS navigation system and satellite phone. Inside the Retro Cruiser, you find a higher floor than normal, with seats (also from a modern Land Cruiser) lowered to maintain adequate headroom. With five inches of length added to the rear doors, ingress is much improved, and space inside the Retro Cruiser is quite generous.

It is also surprisingly comfortable, especially over rough terrain, where its body motions are better controlled than in a modern Land Cruiser, allowing a quicker pace through the boonies with much less jolting and bouncing. Compared with a 1999 Land Cruiser, Millen's redesign has reduced front and rear overhang (by 7.2 and 6.1-inches respectively), and increased the break-over angle (28 vs 24-degrees), the approach angle (48 vs 31), and the departure angle (32 vs 24 degrees). Add an 11.25-inch ground clearance (2.45-inches greater than the Land Cruiser's, only some of which due to the 35-inch BFGoodrich prototype tires on custom-made 17-inch Budnik wheels), and you have a retro-wagon capable of serious off-road work.

But in case all that still isn't enough to prevent you from getting stuck, there are twin 9,000 lb Warn winches. The front hitch is hidden under a panel, and the rear unit hidden under the floor near the rear diff, feeding its cable via guiding rollers to an aperture in the aluminum rear bumper. If they don't help, well, at least there's a 10-gallon freshwater storage tank to keep you going until the helicopter arrives.

Toyota Retro CruiserOkay, the Retro Cruiser is just a one-off project commissioned by Toyota Motor Sales' vice-chairman Yale Gieszl and Lexus's general manager Brian Bergsteinsson (the same guys behind the Lexus street rod we saw at various car shows). But it's a convincing showcase of off-road capability and an evocative celebration of Toyota SUV heritage in one package. How much is the Retro Cruiser worth? Don't even ask.v

ew on the outside, old on the inside is usually the norm for a show-grabbing concept car. But not this one. Instead of being built from dated, inexpensive parts with a fanciful hi-tech body, the Toyota Retro Cruiser plays a role reversal, with an old-fashioned body and bang-up-to-date mechanicals. So what's it like to drive? Auto Express is the first magazine to get its hands on the car and reveal all.

The story began last year when Toyota approached performance and custom specialist Rod Millen Motorsport with the idea of building a 4x4 taking the style of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ45 from 1967, but featuring modern mechanicals.

Millen was first contacted by Toyota in the early Nineties, then touting a serious motorsport budget. Ever since, the pair have been a formidable partnership.

The original Land Cruiser is substantially smaller than today's beast, so Millen had to figure out how the bodywork would fit the larger chassis. The easiest way seemed to be to add more metal to the original FJ bodywork and wings. The petrol engine comes from the current Land Cruiser; the 4.7-litre V8 powerplant produces 230bhp at 4,800rpm with 434Nm of torque at 3,600rpm.

While the Land Cruiser's chassis has been left largely untouched, the suspension and steering underwent serious modifications to allow for the awkwardly shaped bodywork, and off-road ability is significantly uprated. The Connolly hide-clad interior is simple, with the Land Cruiser's stereo joined by a navigation system.

Accelerate away and a growl from the stainless steel exhaust plus a sucking sound from the air filter complement the V8's throaty rumble. At 181kg lighter than the Land Cruiser, the Retro is a brisk performer, sprinting from 0-60mph in 12.2 seconds. Four disc brakes display excellent stopping ability, with 55-0mph taking only 2.98 seconds and 33.5metres.

As a town car, the Retro Cruiser is great - not least because of its good visibility and tight turning circle. Light power-steering and quick throttle responses make it feel ultra-nimble. It also proves seriously capable off-road. With its lighter weight, shorter overhangs and enhanced suspension travel, it can ride over obstacles the Land Cruiser couldn't even contemplate.

Millen would not put a price on the Retro Cruiser, but it cost the equivalent of US 0,000 in man-hours and materials to build. Toyota was obviously interested enough in public reaction to spend that much; if it decides to put the Retro Cruiser into production, we're sure brisk sales will justify the investment.

There's no doubt that people are bored with mass-market modern cars - hence the success of Volkswagen's new Beetle and Chrysler's PT Cruiser in the US. Maybe this Retro Cruiser could be next. It certainly has the stylistic appeal and, when it comes to the driving side, we're sure it has what it takes to more than impress existing 4x4 drivers.

    * Bodywork is based around original 1967 Land Cruiser

    * Platform and mechanicals come from latest 4.7-litre V8 Land Cruiser
